Inversion Ankle Sprain: Injury to the outside ligaments of the ankle. Commonly injured by the ankle rolling to the outside (I rolled my ankle). Like all ligamentous injuries, they are graded by the severity of the injury, Grade I for mild stretch of the ligaments, Grade III for complete rupture of the ligaments. The individual may hear a "pop" but will usually have extreme swelling and pain to the outside of the ankle. Weight bearing is very difficult and crutches are used to aid in walking. Treatment includes RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation to help alleviate the pain and swelling. After the acute phase of injury, rehabilitation may be initiated to restore motion and strength.
