Progressive Web Apps, Another Option in Development

The meaning of ‘Progressive web app’ is as follows:

A web app is called ‘progressive’ when it contains a set of characteristics making it mainly user friendly and platform independent:

Progressive - Works for all users, regardless of the users browser choice because they’re built with progressive enhancement as a core tenet.

Responsive - Fit for all devices: desktop, mobile, tablet, or forms yet to emerge.

Connectivity independent - Service workers allow the apps to work offline, or on low quality networks.

Feels like an App - Feel like an app to the user with app-style interactions and navigation.

Fresh - Always up-to-date thanks to the service worker update process.

Safe Built In - Served via HTTPS to prevent snooping and ensure content hasn’t been tampered with.

Discoverable - Are identifiable as “applications” thanks to W3C manifests and service worker registration scope allowing search engines to find them.

Re-engageable - Make re-engagement easy with features like push notifications.

Installable - Allow users to “keep” apps they find most useful on their home screen without the hassle of an app store.

Linkable - Easily shared via a URL and do not require complex installation.

PWAs are Progressive - These apps work for every end user, regardless of the browser that you are using or even where they are situated in the world! So whether you are using Chrome or Opera or Firefox or whether you are living in India, UK, Europe or even North Korea, it won't make a difference! Progressive Web Apps will work just as well because they’re built with progressive enhancement as a core tenet.

Cross Domain or Same Domain iFrame Automatic Resizing based on Content

The Myiframe.zip app contains what you need to get your iFrames to resize based on the content that is served within the content page(s). These scripts will work on same-domain, or cross-domain setups. iFrame-Test.html is the containing page that houses the iframes. There are 4 pages in this example that are linked content pages (frame.content.html, frame.content2.html, frame.content3.html, and frame.content4.html).

The script called "iframeSize.min.js" runs on the main container page iFrame-Test.html, and the scipt called "iframeContent.min.js" runs on all the content pages being served by the iFrame.

On the main iFrame-Test.html page towards the bottom of the page if you turn on the webconsole log by setting it to true you can use the console to walk through the code along with having the parameters written to the page.

The example at: http://www.christopherpadavick.com/iFrame-Test.html uses a cross-domain setup .

This mini iFrame app allows for automatic resizing of the height and width of both same domain and cross domain iFrames to scale to the contained content. PostMessage is used to pass messages between the host page and the iFrame and when available MutationObserver is used to detect DOM changes, with a fallback to setInterval for IE8-10, and it is fully responsive.
